Mechanical Water Treatment System Based on Filter-AG Filter Media

Mechanical treatment systems based on Filter-AG filter media are used to remove suspended solids from water.

This exceptionally lightweight filter material, manufactured from anhydrous silicon dioxide, is highly effective for mechanical water treatment applications.

A bulk density of 0.38 g/cm³ and relatively large granules (0.6–1.7 mm) with an irregular surface structure ensure efficient filtration of both mechanical particles (down to 20–40 microns) and large flocs of oxidized iron.

Production of Filter-AG Filter Media

Filter-AG is manufactured in the USA by the globally recognized producer of water treatment equipment and materials — Clack Corporation. It is a precisely engineered, high-quality filter medium.

This is one of the oldest filter media available on the market. Compared to analogues, this media remains the lightest to this day, both within its class and among all types of filter media.

Application of Filter-AG Filter Media in Mechanical Water Treatment Systems

The filter media serves as the core component of Ecosoft FP mechanical water treatment systems, which are widely used in the private sector and industry as the first stage of water treatment prior to softening, comprehensive treatment, chlorine removal, and hydrogen sulfide removal, ensuring effective performance of subsequent treatment stages.

Advantages of Water Treatment Systems Based on Filter-AG Media

  • effective removal of suspended solids sized 20–40 μm;
  • filtration occurs throughout the entire depth of the media bed, not only in the upper layer;
  • minimal pressure loss;
  • media does not compact or cake;
  • high economic efficiency (low energy and water consumption during backwashing);
  • long service life.

Operating Principle of a Filter Using Filter-AG Media

The system is a column made of corrosion-resistant plastic, equipped with an automatic control valve manufactured by Clack Corp. (USA).

Chipped edges and irregular surfaces of Filter-AG particles provide a large surface area and a complex flow path of water through the media bed. As a result, a mechanical filtration level of 20–40 μm is achieved.

Water enters the filter housing and passes through the filter media, which effectively retains mechanical particles. Purified water is then discharged through the central distributor tube of the vessel.

The system is connected to the water supply line, sewer system, and power supply.

Regeneration of Mechanical Treatment Systems Based on Filter-AG Media

The regeneration process is performed automatically once the media capacity is exhausted. Regeneration occurs during periods with no water consumption. A reverse flow of water passes through the media bed at high velocity, washing out all accumulated suspended solids and discharging them into the sewer system.

Immediately after completion of regeneration, the system is ready for further operation. Backwashing is carried out using untreated inlet water.

Although Filter-AG is not specifically designed for iron removal, the manufacturer states in the official technical description that extensive operational experience has demonstrated good performance in removing oxidized iron.

Filter-AG has no restrictions on use across industries.

Preparation for Operation of the Mechanical Water Treatment System

Before commissioning the Filter-AG mechanical water treatment system, it is necessary to perform a backwash for 10–15 minutes to remove factory dust and residual particles.

Technical Characteristics of Filter-AG Filter Media

  • color: from light gray to nearly white;
  • bulk density: 0.38–0.42 kg/dm³;
  • true density: 2.25 kg/dm³;
  • effective grain size: 0.67 mm;
  • uniformity coefficient: 1.8;
  • particle size range: 0.6–0.7 mm.

Operating Conditions

  • maximum inlet water temperature: 60 °C;
  • media bed height: 600–900 mm;
  • freeboard inside the filter must be at least 50% of the media bed height;
  • filtration linear velocity: 12 m/h;
  • backwash linear velocity: 20–24 m/h;
  • media bed expansion during backwashing: 20–40% of the media bed height.
