Wastewater treatment · HoReCa
Wastewater treatment plants for hotels and restaurants
BioDisc® rotating systems — biological wastewater treatment up to 180 m³ per day. No odour, no noise, with a sanitary zone of just 5 metres — they operate right next to the venue where your guests relax.
Who needs local treatment plants in HoReCa
Hotels and hotel complexes
A venue outside the city or in the mountains, beyond the reach of central sewerage. Wastewater from rooms, kitchen and laundry must be treated on site — quietly and without odour, because guests relax nearby.
Restaurants and cafés
Roadside complexes, country restaurants, banquet halls. Large peak discharges on weekends and holidays that ordinary septic tanks can’t handle.
Recreation bases and resorts
Cottages, a restaurant and a spa on one site. The load swings from season to season — the system must work both at 10% load and at peak.
Food courts and malls
Sites where the water utility’s limits are exhausted or connection is uneconomical. On-site treatment removes dependence on tariffs and limits.
Why ordinary septic tanks and aeration plants don’t suit hotels
Three problems of traditional plants
- Noise and odour. Blowers hum, and the discharge of contaminated air produces odour — critical where guests relax.
- 15 m sanitary zone. A large chunk of the plot on which you can’t place a terrace, a pool or parking.
- Seasonality. At quarter-load the biology “starves” and dies, and after check-in the system takes weeks to reach operating mode — odour and fines for excessive discharge.
How BioDisc® removes this
- The shaft with biodiscs rotates at just 2 rpm — no blowers, and therefore no noise or odour.
- Sanitary zone — 5 metres, three times smaller.
- Stable operation from 10% of design load — the off-season doesn’t kill the biology.
BioDisc®: one unit — up to 60 m³ per day, three — up to 180 m³
A monoblock turnkey biological treatment plant: a primary settler, two stages of biological treatment and a secondary settler in a single body. The maximum capacity of one unit is 60 m³ per day (a venue for up to 300 people). For larger sites, units are connected in parallel.

| Venue scale | Configuration | Capacity |
|---|---|---|
| Hotel up to 150 rooms (~300 guests), restaurant, recreation base | 1 × BioDisc | up to 60 m³/day |
| Hotel complex up to 300 rooms | 2 × BioDisc | up to 120 m³/day |
| Large complex: hotel + restaurant + spa | 3 × BioDisc | up to 180 m³/day |
The exact model is selected based on the venue’s actual water consumption — a ZIKO engineer designs the system free of charge using project data or water bills. More about BioDisc® technology →
Four treatment stages in a single body
Primary settler
Wastewater from the kitchen and rooms: heavy solids settle, fats float up. Together with the dosing system it dampens peak discharges during the restaurant’s rush hours.
First biological stage
Water reaches the rotating biodiscs. A biofilm of natural microorganisms consumes the pollutants: half a turn the bacteria “eat”, half a turn they “breathe”.
Second biological stage
Final treatment on the second group of contactors — the entire disc surface is engaged, a stable up to 97% treatment regardless of load fluctuations.
Secondary settler
Biomass residues settle and are returned by a pump to the start of the cycle, while treated water is discharged to drainage or a water body in line with standards.

The system complies with European standards EN 12566-3 and EN 12255.
Why BioDisc® was built for hospitality
No noise
No blowers — the shaft rotates twice a minute. The plant can be placed next to a terrace or recreation area.
No odour
No discharge of contaminated air; the process is aerobic and enclosed.
5 m sanitary zone
Three times lower plot requirements than typical plants — critical for dense development and expensive land.
Handles seasonality
Stable treatment from 10% to 100% load — the off-season doesn’t kill the biology.
Minimal costs
Consumption 0.33–0.87 kW, maintenance once a year. Body warranty — 60 years, typical service life — 20–25 years without repairs.
Fast installation
No heavy concrete structures needed — the unit is installed on a prepared bed.

Frequently asked questions
How far from the building can the plant be placed?
BioDisc®’s sanitary zone is 5 metres (typical aeration plants — 15 m). This allows placing the plant even on a compact plot next to the venue.
Will odour be heard or felt on the restaurant terrace?
No. The system has no blowers — the main sources of noise and odour in ordinary plants. The biodiscs rotate at 2 rpm virtually silently, and the aerobic process produces no odour.
What happens in winter when the hotel is 10–20% full?
BioDisc® maintains efficiency from 10% of design load: the biofilm on the discs doesn’t die in the off-season, and the system accepts peak arrivals without a “warm-up”.
How much electricity does the plant consume?
From 0.33 to 0.87 kW depending on the model — an order of magnitude less than compressor plants of similar capacity.
Is a grease trap needed for a restaurant kitchen?
The primary settler retains floating fats. For kitchens with large volumes of greasy wastewater, the engineer may recommend a separate grease trap before the plant — this is determined at the calculation stage.
How often to service the system and who does it?
Scheduled maintenance — once a year. It’s carried out by ZIKO’s own service team; the unit body warranty is 60 years.
What does the cost depend on?
On capacity (model BD–BN or 2–3 units in parallel), site conditions and configuration. Calculation and technical-commercial proposal are free.
