Pharmaceutical products intended for oral administration or injection into the bloodstream must be sterile and fully compliant with microbiological safety requirements. Water treated through industrial water purification processes can be used in various technological operations within the pharmaceutical industry, either as an energy carrier or as a base raw material for the production of medicinal products. Therefore, water treatment for pharmaceutical manufacturing is subject to extremely stringent quality requirements.
Water Quality Standards for Pharmaceutical Manufacturing
In accordance with national quality and safety standards, after industrial water treatment the water used in pharmaceutical manufacturing must comply with specific requirements.
Purified Water
Purified water is used for the production of non-pyrogenic and non-sterile medicinal products. This type of water is obtained by treating standard drinking water using industrial reverse osmosis systems.
Highly Purified Water
Highly purified water is produced by reverse osmosis in combination with industrial ionization and ultrafiltration systems. This type of industrial water treatment requires:
- mandatory continuous technical maintenance;
- regular cleaning of filtering elements.
Water for Injection
Water for injection is intended for the dilution of medicinal products and is used in the manufacture of injectable and inhalation drugs. It is produced using specialized industrial water treatment systems. In such installations, all surfaces in contact with water are made of quartz, specially designated metals, or glass.
During industrial water purification and subsequent storage of water as a raw material for pharmaceutical products, the manufacturer is required to monitor the concentration of aerobic microorganisms in the liquid:
- for purified water — a maximum of 100 viable aerobic microorganisms per 1 ml of liquid;
- for water for injection and highly purified water — a maximum of 10 viable aerobic microorganisms per 100 ml of liquid.
